The Property Industry Foundation (PIF) with partner Australand, will open the first Victorian PIF House for the Lighthouse Foundation today. Known as ‘PIF House – A Lighthouse Home’ the facility is located in southern Melbourne and will provide a home and support for young people aiming to break the cycle of homelessness.

“We are thrilled to hand over the PIF House to the Lighthouse Foundation. The relationship between PIF, Australand and our industry supporters has helped make this important milestone possible,” said Barry Brakey, Chairman, Board of Advisers (VIC) for PIF.

The Property Council of Australia Gala Ball in 2012 raised $100,000 for the home and support was also provided by Australand and friends of PIF who donated over $300,000 through its services, suppliers, contractors and materials.

The home will provide accommodation for four disadvantaged young people and their carers over many years. It will form part of the Lighthouse Foundation’s therapeutic care program creating a warm and caring atmosphere to help support disadvantaged young people.

“The PIF House project is testament to the great differences that can be made by the property community when we join together. Providing a home, support networks and an education is an effective and sustainable way to help establish the lives of young people,” said Mr Brakey

The property has been designed to incorporate shared living spaces including a large communal style kitchen, dining area and recreational spaces. There are six bedrooms for two carers and four youth and a large outside area.

Property Industry Foundation supports Lighthouse by funding four carers in two homes. Volunteers have held Workabees where they have tended the gardens, painted and cleaned. Other volunteer groups have held drives collecting toiletries and winter woollens to be given to the youth who live in these homes.

The Lighthouse Foundation supports homeless young people to find their place within the community providing a home, family and therapeutic care. Through their experience at Lighthouse the young people learn to rebuild their lives.

PIF was established in NSW in 1996 and has since gifted over $20 million dollars in cash. Over 20 children’s charity programs have been supported since PIF’s inception, providing specialist services for at risk youth. The Victorian office opened in late 2008 and has since raised over $1.5 million helping Victorian young people at risk.
